Did you know that over half of US States could deny LBGTQ individuals the right to rent a home or the ability to receive public goods or services? At VML, our team worked with the Human Rights Campaign to raise awareness around these antiquated laws that need to change. We devised a new version of the American Flag- dubbed “The Reality Flag”- which lacked over half of its stars.
The campaign consisted of video spots, social media, PR, and a responsive website experience, which I led. We spotlighted individuals from across the country and elevated awareness around their stories, and around all the ways in which LGBTQ individuals face injustice from US state legal systems.
Results The campaign drove substantial awareness around LBGTQ gaps with state laws. In 2021, the equality act was introduced in the House of Representatives and passed with bipartisan support. HRC continues to work to advance the bill in the senate, with thousands of phone calls and emails submitted in part due to support driven by our campaign. The Reality Flag won gold and silver Clios, a OneShow merit and was shortlisted at Cannes.
